In 2026, Science Tokyo will offer a 4-week summer program focused on medical engineering. Eligibility will be limited to second-year undergraduate students or above at the time of participation, or master’s students enrolled at partner institutions including the U of California Berkeley, the U of California Santa Barbara, Caltech, Stanford, MIT, Georgia Institute of Technology, U of Minnesota, U of Wisconsin-Madison, U of Washington, and Rice University.
Program dates: July 2 – July 29, 2026 (4 weeks)
Costs:
- Program Fee: JPY 150,000 for 4 weeks (to be paid directly to the accommodation management).
- Trip Expenses:
Airline ticket, overseas travel insurance, and local transportation - Living Expenses:

The Center for Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPS) Research Internship Program welcomes graduate students and undergraduates to conduct research at CiRA for a short period. This program is open to undergraduate (mainly the 3rd and 4th year ※) and graduate students who wish to enroll in CiRA.
※This program is primarily intended for students planning to enter graduate school within one or two years.

The annual Misasa International Student Internship Program (MISIP) is designed to promote international collaborative research and education. at the Institute for Planetary Materials (IPM). During the internship program, each student will work on an active IPM research project under the supervision of IPM faculty members and their research groups. The program is open to advanced undergraduate (3rd to 4th year) or graduate (1st to 2nd year, eg master course) students. Candidates should be majoring in earth sciences, physics, chemistry, materials sciences, or related fields, and should have a strong interest in a career pursuing scientific research.
Program dates: July 1 – August 7, 2026
Application Period: 11:59 pm JST March 24.
Costs: Travel expenses and daily living expenses will be covered, and accommodation in the Misasa Guesthouse will be provide.

The international summer program is designed for undergraduate or graduate students who have a sensibility and intellectual curiosity about natural sciences and related fields in sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, macromolecular science, and earth and space science). Applicants must be enrolled in Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree program in universities outside of Japan during the program period. Students who will progress from Bachelor to Master course, or graduate from Bachelor or Master courses during the program are not eligible to apply
Program dates: July 16 – August 27, 2026
Costs:
1) Tuition fee for Research Work *: 57,600 JPY
2) Dormitory fee: 20,000–100,000 JPY per month (depending on the accommodation)
3) Transportation fee from the accommodation to the laboratory: 5,000–10,000 JPY in total

The RIKEN Center for Brain Science (RIKEN CBS), located just outside Tokyo, Japan, offers a summer program to train advanced students interested in brain function. Applicants may choose either a 2-month laboratory internship (Plan A) within a RIKEN CBS laboratory or an intensive 5 days lecture course (Plan B) featuring a distinguished international faculty. Those participating in the internship may also enroll in the lecture course. The course consists of an intensive 5 days lecture series featuring distinguished international faculty and poster sessions to be put on by the program participants.
Attendees come from wide-ranging academic backgrounds and are usually enrolled in graduate courses or have recently embarked on postdoctoral research. However, candidates holding other positions are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be enrolled in an academic institute or company at the time of application throughout the program period. You need to submit a certificate of enrollment at your affiliation during the program. All accepted students must be able to travel to Tokyo.
Program dates: June 9 – August 7, 2026
Costs:
1) No registration fees are required.
2) Dormitory fee: Participants must cover airfare and accommodations, except those approved via request letter.
3) Participants in the internship course are required to have accident insurance.

Lodging: RIKEN will provide financial assistance to participants in courses A and B whose letters requesting financial support have been approved. Applicants must follow RIKEN’s travel itinerary in accordance with RIKEN’s regulations.

The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program (UTRIP) is a summer internship program for students majoring in natural science and other relevant fields. The program will provide students with an opportunity to gain the experience of “real graduate-school life” or “research-centered life.” UTRIP is a gateway to pursuing an advanced degree and experiencing academic life at UTokyo. Participants must have completed at least one full year in a Bachelor’s degree program at the time of application and be enrolled in and, after the UTRIP program ends, be expected to return to, at least another semester, quarter, or another equivalent academic term, in a Bachelor’s degree program (or a Bachelor’s-equivalent year of an integrated Bachelor’s-Master’s degree program) at a university outside of Japan.
Program dates: June 24 – August 4, 2026 (6 weeks)
Costs: All participants except for those receiving the FUTI Award will receive the GSS-UTRIP Scholarship, which includes free housing and a stipend. .

The OIST Graduate School offers education and research opportunities through our Research Internship program in STEM fields for junior and senior undergraduate students, Bachelor’s degree holders, and students enrolled in Master’s programs.. The internship is typically 3 to 6 months. These short-term placements give students the opportunity to gain experience in a particular laboratory or to learn a specific technique. Research Interns will work under the direction of a Professor and contribute to the research activities of OIST.
